Q&A #2 : Photo Gears – 10D9N Japan Winter Wildlife Expedition

We thought that it will be useful to put up a Q&A about our Japan workshops so that it will benefit more photographers who are thinking of joining us.
Here’s a question from one of our interested photographers:

Q: What is the Ideal Reach – 300 / 400/ 600 lens? Is Trolley / Roller Bags ok for the heavy gears or else backpacks?

A: As we will be photo-shooting various subjects at varying distance, we recommend to have a range of lens and 2 camera bodies (35mm equivalent for comparison) of the following arrangement:
Wide angle and 24-70mm – for Snow monkeys and landscape with wildlife in the foreground
500/600mm and/or 100-400mm – for Whooper swans, gulls, eagles and sika deers

Trolley/Roller bag + Backpack is a good choice! Do note that for the Snow Monkey location, it will be best to only carry backpack as trolley/roller would be a hassle for the 2km path through the pine forest. We will bring only the essentials on backpack and leave the rest at the Ryokan (traditional japanese guest house/inn). For ourselves, we are bringing ThinkTank Airport Takeoff roller bag, HPRC roller case, ThinkTank StreetWalker Pro Backpack and ThinkTank Harddrive Backpack.

Q&A #1 : Cranes & Eagles of 10D9N Japan Winter Wildlife Expedition

We thought that it will be useful to put up a Q&A about our Japan trips so that it will benefit more photographers who are thinking of joining us. Here’s a question from one of our interested photographers:

japan winter wildlife cranes2 Q&A #1 : Cranes & Eagles of 10D9N Japan Winter Wildlife Expedition Q: Is the Hokkaido shoot inclusive of the Manchurian Cranes?? The Stellar Eagles sounds very interesting especially.
A: Yes, our 10D9N Japan Winter Wildlife Expedition includes photographing the Manchurian Crane (also known as Red-crowned Cranes). Mid-Feb period is their mating season so you will be able to see some interesting courtship dance display. For the eagles, we will be going out to frozen sea on two ice-breaker trips to photograph the endangered Steller’s Sea Eagle & White-tailed Sea Eagle. It’s a rare opportunity to see hundreds of eagles on the frozen sea ice as the sea is frozen for only 2-3 weeks a year, during this mid-Feb period. It’s a once-a-year photography opportunity.
